§ 35.066. POLICE CHIEF; POLICE OFFICERS.

  • (A) The Police Department shall consist of a Chief of Police and regular police officers.
    (B) The Police Chief and all police officers shall be appointed by the Mayor at will and may be removed by the Mayor at will, except as tenure and terms of employment are protected by statute, ordinance or contract.
    (C) The Police Chief and all police officers shall take the oath required by § 228 of the Constitution of the commonwealth. The Police Chief shall provide bond in the sum of $5,000, with corporate surety authorized to transact business in the commonwealth and conditioned upon the performance of the duties specified herein and with the qualifications set forth in division (D) below.
    (D) Training and experience shall consist of any combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform effectively the duties of the position of Police Chief or police officer.
    (E) Subject to the authority of the Mayor, the Chief of Police shall be a peace officer and responsible for the organization and operation of the Police Department of the city. He or she shall supervise, direct and control the equipment and personnel thereof as peace officers of the city and state in the enforcement of all statutes, laws and ordinances thereof. The Chief of Police shall perform all other duties and responsibilities required of the Chief of Police by statute or ordinance.
    (F) The compensation of the Police Chief shall be at grade 14 in accordance with the Personnel Classification and Compensation Plan of the city. The compensation of all police officers shall be in accordance with the Personnel Classification and Compensation Plan of the city.
    (G) The Personnel Rules and Regulations of the city (Ch. 37) shall apply to the Police Department and to the Chief of Police.
